Dr. DreamingBear Baraka Kanaan has been blessed enough to be one of the unusual suspects given the amazing opportunity to own and play the elusive Hijaz Hang. The introduction of the Hang into Dr. DreamingBear Baraka Kanaan's ‘spoken word’ art form revolutionized not only the poetry itself and its delivery, but also profoundly deepened Dr. DreamingBear Baraka Kanaan as a spiritual being. After years of exploring the musical range of this magical instrument among the wonders of Maui's natural beauty, Dr. DreamingBear Baraka Kanaan learned how to fuse the Hang's Helmholtz resonance with his own quantum poetics. The result is a new kind of Performance Art expression utilizing the latest tech in electronic multimedia, combined with cosmic evolutionary poetics, and ancient-future music, to produce an all encompassing theatrical experience that is transforming and energizing audience worldwide!
The Hang in the Hijaz scale, (scales from Middle-East circa 2000 B.C.) is a mystical instrument indeed, which falls into the idiophone class. The Hang was created by Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer (PANArt) in the year 2000 in Bern, Switzerland. Hangs generate a rare combination of percussive-melodic musical soundscapes and are something of a new phenomenon in the musicworld. The Hang is typically played resting on the player's lap, and is generally played with the hands and fingers which tends to produce a complex overtone-rich sound that is like no other instrument ever heard. Hang are the cutting edge of experimental music.
The Hang is laid our in the ‘flower of life’ format producing sounds that directly engage the cerebral cortex, and create Theta (or dream state) brain waves. It is made from two deep drawn nitrided steel sheets that are attached together creating the recognizable 'UFO shape'. The Hang uses some of the same physical principles as a steelpan but with a nitrided surface and structural change of having two clamped shells with a small opening so that the instrument is a Helmholtz resonator, like a guitar. The creation of the Hang was the result of many years of research on and study of a diverse collection of instruments from around the world such as gongs, gamelan, ghatam, drums, and bells. Metallurgical and acoustic research by the makers has led to significant changes and refinement in structure, design, and process over the years since the first Hang was offered.
Dr. DreamingBear Baraka Kanaan says, “I feel honored and humbled to be a Hangist… this instrument is more than mere brass and steel, rather, it is a part of my very soul, and so I have named her Helios as she is my Sun. It is my hope that when all beings hear her song, they be transfixed into the highest states of consciousness and spiritual awareness. The Hang is the musical Magic Carpet upon which my poetry finds wings for words, and thereby 'edutains' the world. Mahalo (gratitude from the heart) to Fate for the gift of finding the instrument I was born to play, and being able to play it with passion for the masses!”
